5-day White Water Trip on the Salmon River,

You might hesitate to put your gluten or casein free diet in the hands of strangers for 5 days without access to stores, etc, but with Sundog Expeditions there is NO NEED TO WORRY! Last month, my husband, son and I went on a 5 day white water trip on the Salmon River in Idaho with Sundog. I have celiac disease and my son has non-celiac gluten sensitivity combined with a casein free diet. Sundog did a fablulous job of planning and accommodating our diets, and the guides completely understand issues of cross contamination. ONE OF THEIR GUIDES HAS CELIAC and helped tremendously to plan and pack the food they brought on the trip. They are even willing, if asked, to provide a separate set of gluten free condiments to assure that cross contamination doesn't occur. I spoke at length with the owners before the trip and several adjustments were made to the menu so that some of the meals were gluten free already and only a modest amount of accommodation needed to occur. They use Bob's Red Mill mixes for pancakes, cornbread and brownies and provided gluten free rice crackers. They were happy to provide store-bought cookies for other desserts, but I wanted to bake homemade cookies to bring with me because my kids like my baked goods better than store bought. Sundog does trips in Oregon on the Grande Ronde and Owyhee Rivers and on several rivers in Alaska. If you're interested in a trip in Alaska, Valdez where they are based, has limited gluten free options, so if you want to do one of the trips up there (WHICH I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!) you would need to bring gluten free bread, cookies, crackers etc. I have done two other trips with Sundog - we did a trip with in Alaska several years ago before my sons were diagnosed, so I brought all my own gluten free baked goods and had no problems. I also did a trip on the Owyhee River this past June and they did a fabulous job of accommodating not only my gluten free diet, but someone else on the trip had a peanut allergy so they made sure that NO NUTS were on the trip! With Sundog, it was really wonderful to go on a trip and know that they would provide for our gluten and casein free diets without having to worry that I would get enough to eat. My older son and I did the Yampa River in the Spring with a different company that thought accommodating our diet meant providing 3 loaves of gluten free bread (they did not provide any crackers, cookies, or other desserts for us so we could eat only about 1/3 of what was served because they did not even alter the menu to accommodate our diets.) I mention this to emphasize that Sundog really knows what they are doing and when you indicate your diet on the registration form - they take it VERY seriously and follow up with personal contact. The Sundog Expedition website (www.sundogexpeditions.com) has two videos about the trips they do with people giving testimony to the wonderful company and guides they employ.
