Gluten free dining at a restaurant in the Champagne region,

We were planning a day-trip into the Champagne region from where we were staying near Disneyland Paris. Champagne, with its two main towns of Reims and Epernay, was just east of us -- a little over an hour's drive...and a beautiful drive, especially in the Spring when many of the fields are awash in a beautiful shade of yellow, which I'm told is some sort of plant used for cooking oil. We had asked the concierge at our resort to find a restaurant in Epernay that could handle a gluten-free request. We were planning to go for a morning tour of Moet Chandon and the champagne caves and then wanted to have lunch somewhere in town. After making a few calls on our behalf, the concierge recommended La Table Kobus, which I believe has a long history in Epernay. The restaurant was pretty quiet...only a handful of other tables were occupied. Our waiter was very friendly and spoke English well enough that we could communicate (and he helped translate certain items on the menu for us). He took our gluten-free French dining card back to the chef, and they recommended that our son have a steak and mashed potatoes (as opposed to the potatoes frites, which were fried in an oil they were unsure about). They seemed very careful about making sure our son would be safe, which we appreciated. The steak, which our other son ordered as well, was a bit thin and not the most tender...but that is how many steaks are in France, especially for lunch. They are not necessarily a thick, juicy cut of beef. But our kids like steak, and the mashed potatoes were delicious. We were glad to seemingly be in good hands. My husband and I shared an appetizer, which was an unusual variation of spring rolls. One was stuffed with a lemony cream, almost a sweet dessert-like dish. The other was stuffed with a cold crab meat. My husband did not care for it at all, so I ate most of it. However, my husband did enjoy his entree...a thicker cut of steak, and I REALLY enjoyed the fish I ordered, which was served atop a butternut squash puree, if I recall correctly. That is all we ordered. We decided to get some sort of dessert treat elsewhere, so I'm not sure what desserts they offered, or if there were any gluten-free options. Our son did get a mild stomachache and a bit of diarrhea later that afternoon, but it was hard to know if it was just a result of something he ate somewhere -- and not necessarily at this restaurant -- or if he just had some sort of mild stomach bug, easily picked up when traveling. Fortunately, whatever it was seemed to pass quickly. That's the thing about Celiac... sometimes you don't know if a stomachache is something more. But if you're planning a trip to the Champagne region, La Table Kobus is worth considering, because finding a restaurant that will agree to work with gluten-free requests is hard enough, and they really do seem to take it seriously. Just be sure to take a dining card explaining your needs (in French), and ask a lot of questions.
