Excellent Gluten Free Tea at London's St. James Hotel,

We had a wonderful gluten free afternoon tea here at the St. James's Hotel and Club, a beautiful and luxury 5-star hotel in London's St. James neighborhood. While the outside of this boutique hotel, nestled on a quiet side street, is traditional, the inside has a much more contemporary feel. Tea is served in the bistro/bar area, which is decorated beautifully in light colors and has large windows facing the street. It is a small area but elegant. This is definitely the best deal in town for tea, as it is perfectly prepared, graciously served, and a wonderful value at just 29.50 pounds. (You will pay twice that -- or close to it -- for many afternoon teas in London. And here, at the St. James's, the portions are extremely generous, too. It was hard to believe it was all gluten free (it tasted exactly like what you may remember "regular" tea sandwiches, scones, and pastries taste like. The chef has done a superb job creating gluten free versions of all these delicacies. Gluten free fans of high tea will not feel left out of shortchanged in the least. If you are gluten free, you are in for a real treat. We are from the U.S., and we have nothing that comes close to quality of this gluten free tea experience back there! The sandwiches (cucumber and cream cheese, egg with watercress, smoked salmon, and ham) were very tasty and served on deliciously moist varieties of gluten free bread. The scones -- plain and raisin -- were indistinguishable from regular ones you remember. (We knew they were not mixed up with the "regular" ones, however, as they were a bit smaller and shaped differently). They are served with large portions of clotted cream and homemade strawberry jam. The gluten free pastries were too many to count -- and oh-so-wonderful: a mini lemon cupcake, almond cake, cheesecake, decadent chocolate cake, hazelnut cake, and even a small cup of chocolate mousse. Frankly, this gluten free assortment was even more impressive than the non-GF assortment. The tea was wonderful as well -- you can choose from many varieties, including a premium assortment. I cannot recommend afternoon tea at the St. James's highly enough -- for the food itself, the quiet and elegant atmosphere, and the attention shown to their gluten free guests. What a treat it was to feel included in this special English tradition.
