We had owner Maria Fraser as our server, so we lucked out. We'd been here before -- in fact, every summer we visit Ocean City, we make a point of going to this restaurant, which seems to get better and better. Everything on the menu already is -- or can be modified to be gluten free, including the desserts. I ordered Clams Casino as an appetizer, just because it sounded so good and could be made gluten free. It was delicious. And I had probably the best entree I've had in recent memory (and in fact, one of the best meals ever). I ordered Potato Crusted Salmon with hunks of lump crab on top, along with sides of mashed sweet potatoes and a green bean/carrot medley with almond slivers. Wonderful! My mother ordered another fish entree, and my kids each ordered steaks. They don't serve regular bread there, but they do have gluten free rolls available upon request, free of charge. My Celiac son loved that, for this one meal, HE was the one who got to enjoy the bread while the rest of us went without! Usually it's the other way around in many restaurants! We also enjoyed good wines from their wine list, but alas, none of us had room for dessert on this visit! The restaurant has really been gaining notoriety and accolades, and it is no surprise. This is a must-visit restaurant when in Ocean City, Bethany, Fenwick, or Rehoboth Beach. I recommend making a reservation, because the restaurant is relatively small. It's in the first floor of an older and beautifully restored house. There is a private party room upstairs.

New gluten-free restaurant in Ocean View, DE near Bethany,

We visited this very "gluten-free friendly" new restaurant that just opened a few months ago in Ocean View, Delaware, due west a few miles from the heart of Bethany Beach. One of the owners, Cathy Berzins, who is also the head chef, has Celiac Disease. So needless to say, your needs are well taken care of here! Almost everything on the menu is gluten-free (although they don't make a big deal about advertising that fact), and anything that isn't can be made to be gluten-free. The restaurant is in what looks like someone's former nice and spacious beach cottage. There are various small, cozy rooms. They are open daily from 7 am to 7 pm and serve breakfast, lunch, and early dinners. They offered many HOMEMADE gluten-free breakfast treats...coffee cake, a chocolate chocolate chip muffin, nut breads, and cinnamon rolls. Typically they even have scones but were out of them the morning we visited for breakfast. We sampled just about everything...the coffee cake, muffin, and cinnamon roll. All were good, but the coffee cake was especially tasty. In addition to this "appetizer" of baked goods, lattes, and gluten-free Ghirardelli hot cocoas, our "party of five" splurged on many other breakfast entrees. Between the five of us, we tried the "crazy eggs" (like a frittata), the gluten-free belgian waffle (yummy!), and the very delicious gluten-free "creme brulee" French toast. The homemade gluten-free bread used to make the French toast tasted like "regular" bread. We'd love to go back for lunch or dinner sometime...they offer sandwiches on their homemade gluten-free bread, soups, salads, and other "light fare" for lunch, and a limited but very appealing menu for early dinners: crab cakes, filet mignon, seared jumbo scallops, beef bourguignon, and duck. The chef/owner, Cathy Berzins, and her co-owner, Maria Fraser, couldn't have been nicer, and we had the chance to talk with Cathy at length after our meal when she took the time to come out of the kitchen as the "breakfast hour" was winding down. They hope to stay open year round...so if you're in Ocean City, Maryland -- or Fenwick, Bethany, Dewey or Rehoboth Beach -- this summer, or any other time of year, stop in to the Cafe on 26. No matter what time of day, there will be many safe and delicious gluten-free meal options waiting for you!
