A true gluten-free find in downtown Longmont Colorado!,

After running a remote errand in Longmont Colorado, we found ourselves (my two children, ages 7 and 11, and I) famished with no known gluten-free dining prospects. We were hungry in that ‘I need to eat within 10 minutes’ way with no snacks on board. I called Sweet Escapes bakery, a wonderful gluten free bakery in Longmont who unfortunately for us has just gone wholesale with public hours just on Fridays (today is Thursday). They did share that they supply a local cafe (the Sun Rose Cafe in downtown Longmont, Colorado) with their English muffins, sandwich rolls and flatbread. We hightailed it there to our sheer delight and surprise at our findings. Downtown Longmont is regentrifying, though gives a nod to the old West in its downtown construction and storefronts. We only hoped for gluten free consumables when opening the door to the Sun Rose, and were we ever surprised! We were greeted by the friendliest and most helpful staff ever. I felt I’d just met a genuine new friend! They have a deli counter with lots of dry goods and deli items available for sale as well as a restaurant. The decor really was surprisingly hip. Deep mustard walls climbing to meet burnt red tin tile ceiling covered with local oil paintings that were charming, contemporary and actually good. We had the most helpful waitress ever. She brought us their dedicated gluten-free menu which was two pages long spanning all the meals they offer breakfast to dinner (AND they have live music of varying genres in the evening). We settled on hot panini sandwiches featuring flatbread from Sweet Escapes bakery. The kids went mainstream with cheese only, and turkey and cheese for the other. The sandwiches arrived with small bowls of large dark grapes and a selection of 8 different types of potato chips (they were served in individual bags). I opted for a more exciting version of a tuna melt (house made tuna salad with Roma tomatoes, chopped artichoke hearts, house made hummus, roasted red peppers, Dijon mayo and Colby Jack cheese on grilled flat bread ) making it feel more like small town haute cuisine. It was delicious. I opted for the cole slaw (vs. the chickpea artichoke salad) which was very ordinary. We also enjoyed an organic root beer which was yummy. They felt to be committed to fresh, healthier cuisine without sacrificing taste and flair. The food was good and the ambiance a total unexpected find. My one beef: the price (hence 4 palms vs. 5). My sandwich, though good, was $11.45. They did not mention when they said the kids menu items could be modified to be gluten free that $3.00 was added to each of the two sandwiches to use the flatbread. Our tab came to $35 which I felt was steep for an impromptu lunch NOT in an urban eatery OR that was not extraordinary local specialty cuisine. My issue. Others may not feel that way. BUT having said that the warmth with which we were received and guided through their offerings could not have been better or more welcoming. Our waitress went on to share they really can accommodate most allergies. They do not have many vegan offerings and ‘dairy free’ can be a challenge but I have no doubt they’ll go the extra mile willingly to please any customer. You can review their menus on the website before going.
