Minutes from Prague's Old Town Square down a narrow street sits one of the newer additions to Prague's fine dining seafood options, Zdenek's Oyster Bar. Granted, a restaurant with a name like this might not be the first place one would look for a gluten-free dining experience, and my wife and I can be counted in that category. We did not go there looking for a meal, in fact we weren’t even looking for Zdenek’s. Instead, while roaming around Prague late one afternoon we decided that a drink would be a nice way to end the afternoon when we stumbled upon Zdenek’s, right across an eight foot wide street from St. Jacob’s Basilica. Its initial appeal was that here was a tremendously charming bar with indoor and outdoor seating and a huge selection of champagnes and wines. Food wasn’t even on our minds but we figured what could be the harm in looking over a menu. I am not a fan of oysters but I sure do like other seafood options. As I looked around I saw several tables, and the bar, full of seafood that appeared fresh and looked delicious. However, as we all know that is but hurdle number one. It was now time to check on the gluten-free potential of eating here. They were well prepared for me. As always I started off my ordering by showing the waiter my Czech language gluten-free explanation restaurant app (a free iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch app from http://www.celiactravel.com/ that has explanations in 51 different languages). He read the entire thing (something I found reassuring in all of the Eastern European restaurants I ate in) and told me that he would check with the chef on everything. Before I could say another thing he was gone and when he returned he went through the menu and explained to me what would be safe for me to eat. I don’t always have so many seafood options so I took advantage of the situation by enjoying myself. Granted, if you are a meat lover, or if you do not eat seafood, then his is not the place for you. It is also on the pricey side so I would not recommend it for a family outing with kids. But if it is seafood you crave in a relaxing atmosphere, on a quiet backstreet in Old Town Prague away from the hustle and bustle of tourists then you could do a lot worse than dining at Zednek’s.
