Gluten-Free, Vegan, Dairy-Free Dining in Prague: No Problem!,

An unpretentious excellent vegetarian restaurant right in the heart of Prague (nearest metro Staromestska, Namesti Republiky) only a few minute walk from Prague’s Old Town Square. Don’t get fooled by the tiny seating area when you walk in since a large seating area is just a floor below. But be prepared, reservations are an absolute must. I’ve been told that it doesn’t matter what time of year you go since this is a hugely popular venue for Czechs and not simply a tourist stop. As in all of my Eastern European dining stops I started off the meal by showing the waiter my gluten-free explanation, this time in Czech, restaurant app (a free iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch app from http://www.celiactravel.com/ in 51 different languages) and the next thing you know I had a gluten-free menu in my hand. Ahh! the beauty of technology. He also assured me that since they cater to people of all types of food allergies and issues that I had nothing to worry about. The entire menu (gf menu or otherwise) identifies the food as either vegan, gluten-free and dairy-containing. It would probably be easier to list the foods that I couldn’t have than those that I was able to choose from. I ended up with a variety of roasted vegetables and a fantastic risotto. I could have had a variety of salads, corn tortilla quesadillas, mushroom dishes, and on and on. The staff also is well-trained and understood my concerns and answered my questions with respect. Something that is not always the case. Of the four of us who dined there we also had a vegetarian. Between the two of us we had a very pleasant and worry-free dining experience at Maitrea.
