I was there this summer, and let me tell you I was happy to discover this place. First of all, I talked to the owner, who is himself a celiac (I speak Hungarian) and he told me, that he has dedicated dishes and one side of the kitchen, where only gluten free dishes are made, so there is no danger of cross contamination. Second, on the extensive menu, most everything is available in a gluten free version. And that includes DESSERTS! I didn't have any space left for dessert because I was full, but jut to read the choices made me drool. This place has indoor and outdoor dining, tennis courts, lap pool, massage, sauna, etc. Nicely landscaped gardens and right on one of the hilltops in the Buda side greenbelt. Lovely!

This review is not strictly about a grocery store, but about this chain drugstore called DM. They are found in every major city in Hungary, and dozens of locations in Budapest. I was very happy to discover, that they added all kinds of gluten free items to their inventory in their stores this summer. I was buying my fresh bread and rolls (packed in a vacuum bag) at this store, and they had one particular bread, which looked and tasted a lot like German rye bread, but a GF version. They also had various GF flours, flour mixes and cookies. Very good stuff!

The grocery stores listed above are found all over the country. These stores are introducing an authentic Italian frozen food line called OPLA CHE BONITA by Pandea. These are gluten free frozen, convenience dishes, which include Penne Arrabbiata, Penne al Ragu, Panini, Pizza and Lasagne. They are wonderful, real Italian dishes, and warming them up should be every tourist's dream. For people who must eat Gluten Free, they are god sent.

This Hungarian Celiac Society website has information on eating gluten-free in Budapest and other Hungarian towns/cities. They list restaurants that have gluten-free items on their menu or have a working knowledge of gluten-free food preparation. There is even a map pinpointing the restaurants and a description (in Hungarian) of Celiac Disease that you can print out and show to the server/manager/chef at a restaurant to help you communicate your needs. Visit the English version of their site at (cut and paste this link) http://www.liszterzekeny.hu/tiki-index.php?page=%20Gluten-free%20in%20Hungary&structure=%20Gluten-free%20in%20Hungary

This is THE BEST GF PIZZA EVER !! There is a GF section right on their menu. THe waiters speak great English. The restaurant is working with Dr Schaars (Italian GF food company) to serve a fresh, not frozen, pizza crust that is cooked in a wood fire oven. I gave my husband a bite and he said he couldn't tell it was GF and he loved it. I haven't eaten anything so good since I was diagnosed. I ate at Etna I on the Buda side. It is definately off the tourist path, but you can get there by a bus #11 from Batthyani ter Metro stop, or it would be well worth a taxi ride. There is also an Etna II on the pest side, near the train station (I included their web site). If we had come here earlier in our trip and known it was so good, I would have eaten here repeatedly. PS - the regular non-GF calzone was great, and everything we saw folks eating looked really good as well.
