| Vacationing in Mexico with dietary issues can be a scary thing. We were steered to the Rock 'n Java restaurants and managed to have everyone's needs meet at every meal. The staff had a list of menu items for gluten free, diabetic, sugar-free, carb free, sodium free and just about anything else you could want. The owner even whipped up special desserts to accommodate us. We had 3 special diets in our group, and we were all happy. The food was delicious, and everything was made fresh to order. I would recommend calling ahead and speaking to Lisa Ramirez of Rockn Java, the owner. They have a US line at the restaurant which I believe is on their web site http://www.rocknjavacozumel.com I hope you enjoy this place as much as we all did. |

| Just returned from a wonderful experience at an all-inclusive resort in Cancun. Although we have visited Mexico many times, I have been very hesitant to travel since being diagnosed with celiac disease 3 years ago. I contacted a travel agent, Doreen Costa @ Travel Leaders, whose name I found on this Gluten-Free Travel site. Doreen made MANY phone calls to various resorts in Mexico on our behalf, and we finally settled on Dreams Cancun Resort and Spa. Doreen obtained the name of the food and beverage manager at Dreams, and I corresponded with him via email several times; he assured me the resort would be able to accomodate my special diet. They did not disappoint me! The resort has 3 different restaurants - 1 served buffet-style meals and the other 2 were menu-type restaurants. At each restaurant, the manager, the waiters, and even the busboys, were EXTREMELY accomodating! Even the chef at the buffet-style restaurant prepared special meals just for me! Although I took a gluten-free passport that translated English/Spanish, I never had a language problem. I only had 1 meal that made me feel just a bit bloated - otherwise each and every meal was delicious and well-prepared! I definitely recommend Dreams Cancun Resort and Spa, and we will be using Doreen Costa @ Travel Leaders again for future travel plans - she was knowleable about the GF diet, and she was determined to find us a resort that wanted to work with us! |

| We had a wonderful time in Mexico. We stayed at the Riu
Caribe. It was beautiful and they had an International buffet
every night with foods that were gluten-free every night. I
didn't get sick one time while we were there. I even had some
margaritas! We also ate at the Mexican Fine Dining inside the
hotel. Very nice and the food was out of this world. I had a
dining card explaining my gluten intolerance (in Spanish) and
gave it to the waiter. He in turn gave it to the chef. The chef
came out and told me what I could eat. He fixed me something
special, too! It was a very good experience. (We also went out
in Cancun to the Argentine Steak House inside the Hard Rock
Cafe mall. It was fine dining at its best. Also gave my card to
them and the chef came to the table and said what I ordered
was fine. Never had a problem and the food was the best!) |

| It is amazing how the chefs are willing to cook what i want. My experience was great, being on vacation and having gluten-free food! There was a menu of all the selections they had on the cruise and it was full of variety for me to eat something new that was gluten-free everyday.

| My husband and I visited this adults-only all-inclusive resort in 2007. They admitted this was their first time trying to handle a gluten free diet, but they did a fantastic job. The staff was wonderful in accomadating my gluten free dining needs and the restaurant cards I took with me helped greatly in getting past the language barrier. I had a wonderful week of gluten free meals that were delicious with no reactions.
For each meal, the chef would talk to me about my options and for some they prepared special dishes (and desserts) for me. All of the meals have a menu to choose from, and breakfast also has a buffet. There are several restaurants on the property and we tried each of them at least once. They each cater to a different food style.
Outside the resort, we visited Mayan ruins, did an adventure tour, and went to the city of Playa del Carmen. The resort offers spa facilities, daily activities, pools, snorkeling, kayaks, and beaches. I would go back again. |

| I was very apprehensive about going to Moon Palace because I knew most restaurants were buffet only, and I wasn't sure how well the servers could speak English. I called and email ahead, and while it took several times, I finally got someone who said to find her when I checked in. I believe she was with Public Relations.
It took a while to track her down, but when I finally did, she created a dining card for me in Spanish and sent an email to all the restaurant managers to let them know my issue.
I did still have some trouble though because I had to track people down for buffet meals to see what on the buffet was ok, and because of limited English, it was hard to understand what they were telling me. Not all of the meals were great - some of the extra scared people still gave me the dreaded pile of lettuce with oil and vinegar, or dry un seasoned meat with a side of dry unseasoned veggies.
However, I did not get sick while I was there, so I suppose I can't complain too much. I also brought in packaged food for backup snacks. If you do this, I would recommend also having a note from your doctor for customs.
I went to Moon Palace because my sister in law got married there - I didn't choose it - and while they did their best to take care of me and I didn't get sick, it did feel like going to a different restaurant every night, re-explaining everything, and being a bit stressed about it. I would not go back by choice. |
