We were in Rehoboth Beach last weekend, and found a really great gluten-free friendly restaurant - Hobo's. Most of the menu was gluten-free, and several items could be modified to become so. The owner/executive chef has a child with celiac disease, and she's very aware of the diet and cross- contamination. They have corn tortillas for the quesadillas and gluten-free bread for the sandwiches. She marked on the menu the few things that I could not eat, but it was very few! Definitely recommend it. We visited this very "gluten-free friendly" new restaurant that just opened a few months ago in Ocean View, Delaware, due west a few miles from the heart of Bethany Beach. One of the owners, Cathy Berzins, who is also the head chef, has Celiac Disease. So needless to say, your needs are well taken care of here! Almost everything on the menu is gluten-free (although they don't make a big deal about advertising that fact), and anything that isn't can be made to be gluten-free. The restaurant is in what looks like someone's former nice and spacious beach cottage. There are various small, cozy rooms. They are open daily from 7 am to 7 pm and serve breakfast, lunch, and early dinners. They offered many HOMEMADE gluten-free breakfast treats...coffee cake, a chocolate chocolate chip muffin, nut breads, and cinnamon rolls. Typically they even have scones but were out of them the morning we visited for breakfast. We sampled just about everything...the coffee cake, muffin, and cinnamon roll. All were good, but the coffee cake was especially tasty. In addition to this "appetizer" of baked goods, lattes, and gluten-free Ghirardelli hot cocoas, our "party of five" splurged on many other breakfast entrees. Between the five of us, we tried the "crazy eggs" (like a frittata), the gluten-free belgian waffle (yummy!), and the very delicious gluten-free "creme brulee" French toast. The homemade gluten-free bread used to make the French toast tasted like "regular" bread. We'd love to go back for lunch or dinner sometime...they offer sandwiches on their homemade gluten-free bread, soups, salads, and other "light fare" for lunch, and a limited but very appealing menu for early dinners: crab cakes, filet mignon, seared jumbo scallops, beef bourguignon, and duck. The chef/owner, Cathy Berzins, and her co-owner, Maria Fraser, couldn't have been nicer, and we had the chance to talk with Cathy at length after our meal when she took the time to come out of the kitchen as the "breakfast hour" was winding down. They hope to stay open year round...so if you're in Ocean City, Maryland -- or Fenwick, Bethany, Dewey or Rehoboth Beach -- this summer, or any other time of year, stop in to the Cafe on 26. No matter what time of day, there will be many safe and delicious gluten-free meal options waiting for you!

This is the perfect restaurant for anyone with food allergies or special dietary needs. All meals are being prepared fresh from organically grown meats and veggies. There are no preservatives in any of the meals. The menu is about 85% gluten free, what a dream. I talked with the chef herself and she actually marked up a special menu for me, marking the items that contain gluten, rather than the other way around. Since most of the dishes are gluten free. She did mentioned that if I really wanted one of the other dishes that contain gluten, she would be able to find a substitution to still give me the perfect meal experience. Our table had me, being gluten free, a vegetarian, and a vegan. The wait staff and everyone else was great, was aware and helped make this evening perfect. There is nothing more you can asked for, a day at the beach, completed by the perfect meal without worries.

A great place to have some breakfast - all day. The wait staff does not really know what gluten free means, but after a brief explanation she understood and was able to convey the information to the kitchen staff. They are willing to work with you as long you take the time and explain your situation. I have no doubt that they would even let you read the ingredients on any of the products they use, if you asked. I was in the mood for an omelet which was very delicious. The omelets are made fresh to order, so there is no batter or anything mixed into the eggs to make it fluffier. I would give this experience 4 stars, from the experience, but the fact that I had to explain gluten free options makes me rate it with 3 stars to stay within the guidelines of this website. I still recommend this place.

This place has some great seafood. Don't expect to be seated when you arrive. The wait is generally long, but worth it. Once I placed the order, the manager stopped by the table to ensure us that the meal will be prepared in accordance to our requirements. The selection was pretty good, since you can select any fish on the menu (except the salmon).

Last night we ate at the Cultured Pearl and I called ahead to be sure that everything would work out. The manager spoke to me on the phone and I learned that any teriyaki dish is safe. They make their own teriyaki sauce and it is GF. As has been previously reported, they offer GF soy sauce if you are having sushi. He did mention that there are a few things, like eel, which already are marinated in soy and should be avoided. Anything that they make from scratch can be made safely. He made a point of telling me that they have many customers with Celiac and are pleased to able to accommodate them. My son ordered chicken teriyaki and had veggie sushi with the GF soy sauce. Also the edamame bar is great and we were assured that nothing unfriendly is in the edamame. The dinner was terrific. SUBMITTED BY DC CELIACS SUPPORT GROUP http://www.dcceliacs.com

Big Fish Grill has gluten-free menus for lunch and dinner, BUT their salmon is cooked in a NON-GF teriyaki sauce, so they don't offer it on their GF menu. I tried to see if they would let me bring our own sauce. They said to call in advance and they would try to see if they could get a GF sauce so we could have the salmon. The managers come to the table to personally take your order. They recheck everything with the chef and oversee the cooking of your meal. POSTED BY DC CELIACS SUPPORT GROUP http://www.dcceliacs.com

The Cultured Pearl offers mixed Asian cuisine, and they now list gluten-free teriyaki sauce as an option on thier menu! No gluten- free menu, per se, but our waiter was knowledgeable about how foods were prepared and helpful with our order. POSTED BY DC CELIACS SUPPORT GROUP http://www.dcceliacs.com

The owner of China Express, Xi (pronounced Zee) is quite knowledgeable about gluten-free foods and has several Celiac customers. Their chicken base contains soy sauce, so be sure there is no chicken base in your dish. Tell them in advance you need GF. He has many GF customers and is very accommodating. They make everything to order and had gluten-free La Choy soy sauce, but either bring your own soy sauce or call ahead to be sure they have some in the restaurant -- they just happened to have it at the time we were there. Our group of 14 people had mixed reviews of the restaurant -- from very good, to fair, to not very good. They were extremely nice and went to great lengths to meet our needs (not just the GF needs!). Very small restaurant, so call ahead. POSTED BY DC CELIACS SUPPORT GROUP http://www.dcceliacs.com

Only fries -- not anything else -- goes in the fryer, so the fries are safe and gluten-free. Their burgers are also gluten-free (no filers). You can ask to have it handled properly so there's no cross- contamination. Obviously, you can't eat their buns, but you can always bring your own. Recommendations include the Liz Lovely cookies (http://www.lizlovely.com) and Grandma's Gone GF (grandmasgoneglutenfree@comcast.net). They also have a dedicated GF freezer, which is like at-home freezers -- no glass door -- so I overlooked it at first. POSTED BY DC CELIACS SUPPORT GROUP http://www.dcceliacs.com

This is a fairly new restaurant. It's clear that you need reservations in advance. It says they are very aware/accommodating of ALL special food needs. Got a "Best of Delaware" rating and said they accommodate all special food needs. I just stopped in for an appetizer with one other person from our group, and neither of us needs GF food, so were weren't able to test it out. The guacamole was very good. Service was awful, but that may have been due to the time of day (mid- afternoon) and the individual server. I didn't use the restroom there, but the other person did, and said it was not good. Iron Hill Brewery is a restaurant with 2 locations in Delaware, 5 in Pennsylvania, and one in New Jersey. They have a very extensive (2 page) gluten-free menu at their restaurant. It includes soups, salads, appetizers, shared plates, burgers, sandwiches, and numerous beef, chicken, fish, and seafood entrees. I ordered the outstanding Sweet Potato and Maple Bisque soup to start, served with nutmeg creme fraiche -- YUM!!!!! Then I got a turkey burger topped with guacamole, tomato, bacon, pepper jack, and ancho-honey mayo. It, too, was wonderful. The only downside is that burgers and sandwiches have to be ordered without bun/bread, since they don't have gluten-free buns/bread available. I would think that these days, it would be relatively easy for restaurants like this to keep gluten-free buns and bread on hand. There are so many good varieties available, and they can keep it in the freezer to use as needed when a g-f customer comes in. That way, it doesn't go bad. It would be a nice option to have...to be able to order a burger or sandwich and be able to enjoy it the old-fashioned way! I did also appreciate the fact that, being a brewery, they did offer a gluten-free beer: Red Bridge, by Anhueser Busch. I'd highly recommend this restaurant if you live in or are traveling through Pennsylvania or Delaware. Visit http://www.ironhillbrewery.com to see their locations.

We vacation in Ocean City, MD for a week each summer, and each time we come, we go online and try to find any information we can about gluten-free restaurants in the area. We don't typically have a lot of luck. This year, we vowed to try something new, and we found a steakhouse, called Steakhouse 26, mentioned online. It is owned by a man whose three children and wife are gluten-free. His name is Jerry Richard (pronounced rih-shard), and he is also the head chef. When we arrived at the restaurant, at the end of a nice strip mall anchored by a Super Giant grocery store, we confirmed that they'd be able to prepare a safe g-f meal for our son. Jerry came right out and introduced himself. He explained that many things on the menu (steaks and seafood, for the most part) were gluten-free, and that most things could be tailored to be g-f if we wanted. He even mentioned in passing that he makes gluten- free fried calamari and shrimp for his family all the time. So we chose an appetizer of gluten-free fried shrimp (you don't find THAT very often!) and ordered a flat-iron steak for our Celiac son. All in all, the meal was outstanding. We enjoyed a delicious bottle of Greg Norman Shiraz, devoured our delicious and very hearty salads (my spinach salad with cranberries, almonds, and gorgonzola was to-die-for), and savored our entrees (in addition to the flat iron steak, people at our table ordered the filet tips, tilapia, and filet mignon/lobster tail surf and turf). The only issue was that when they brought out the flat iron steak for our son, it was sitting in a demi glace, which the chef had previously told us was NOT gluten-free. Fortunately, we questioned it, and the server went right back to the kitchen to inquire. Indeed, they had made a mistake and had to make his meal over again. Better safe than sorry...and we were happy to wait while they cooked a new steak. The mashed potatoes (g-f) and vegetables (a green bean/yellow bean medley) served with the entrees were very tasty as well. Our boys enjoyed g-f ice cream sundaes sprinkled with coconut for dessert, and the rest of us at the table shared a decadent bread pudding with caramel sauce (heaven!). If you arrive at the restaurant before 5:30 (as we did), they have a special "early bird" special of buy-one-get-one-free entrees (I'm not sure if this is year-round or not and if it is just mid-week as opposed to busier weekend nights). The range of steaks and seafood is extensive, and the ambiance is nice as well. We had a very friendly server, and the staff generally seems eager to accommodate special diets. I'd recommend this place highly...just be vigilant as always. As our experience shows, even a restaurant with a knowledgeable chef can make mistakes occasionally, so you have to be on your toes!
