It's getting better and better to dine gluten-free on this college campus
When I first started eating gluten free my freshman year of
college it was hard to find restaurants on campus [we have
restaurant style instead of dining halls] that offered gluten free
foods. However the school keeps getting better and better
about the choices it offers. There is a build-your-own salad
place called Core at two locations on campus. Although you
have to be very particular about what you get due to cross
contamination, they do a really good job at posting which
dressings are gluten free [after I complained though haha!].
You can also get your vegetables put over brown rice which is
good for us too! The italian place called 3 Cheese's offers gluten
free pasta but it is entirely lacking. They make the pasta by
running it under warm water so it is very hard and most of the
sauces include gluten. I recommend making your own pasta in
the dorm kitchen since it is way easier. The best place in my
opinion is the build-your-own sandwich and bagel placed called
On Deck Deli. Not only can you get lettuce wraps but the also
have two different types of Gluten Free bread as well as Gluten
Free Bagels. IQ Fresh is another place you can go and have
your wrap turned into a salad. The Cellar, which is in the
downstairs part of the student union, offers their food without a
bun as well. The Mexican restaurant on campus, Cafe Senora
also has corn tortillas that are gluten free, but this isn't the best
restaurant in the world. Also, the markets on campus house
several selections of gluten free foods and even the Annie's
microwaveable gluten free meals. Another great place is Oy Vey
with is a kosher deli on campus that has an assortment of
salads, homemade soups and even a delicious salmon dish! By
far the best place on campus is Fuel, which is located inside the
Gym and has literally just opened. They offer an assortment of
salads with several dressings that are gluten free, even a ranch!
Besides those places everything else is relatively tricky and it is
important that you check all ingredients and labels at the other
restaurants.
If you are looking for a gluten free friendly school then I highly
suggest the University of Arizona because they are getting more
and more friendly! And make sure you visit Fuel and Oy Vey
since they are absolutely delicious! The only downturn however
is that you basically have to live off of lettuce while you're here
if you don't want to cook for yourself! __________________
