As you'll see if you Google "gluten free Paris," there is a fair
amount of buzz about this -- the one and only gluten-free
restaurant in Paris. Word is that the owner has Celiac and got so
frustrated trying to explain his diet to restaurants in Paris that
he decided to open his own, 100% gluten-free restaurant. It's
been open for at least several years now, and we are so
thankful to have learned about it, because dining gluten-free in
Paris is a big challenge, in our opinion. It was nice to dine at Des
Si et Des Mets -- twice on our trip -- and to know that our son
would get a safe meal without our having to explain things,
show our dining card, etc, etc. Both nights we dined there (a
Wednesday and a Friday) we arrived at 7 pm and were seated at
a nice round table inside but near the open windows/patio facing
the lovely, sloping, cobblestone street -- just up the road from
where Van Gogh lived when he lived in Paris. (The restaurant
was in a quiet area of the "artsy" Montmartre section of Paris,
which we absolutely loved.) The restaurant offers a price fixe
menu, which was a very good value. It included an appetizer,
main course, and dessert, as well as coffee or tea. They also had
optional wine pairings with each course -- and a cheese course
for just a few extra Euros. They had a children's menu, from
which our kids ordered. That included a main course and
dessert, as well a a drink (soda or juice). Both nights we had a
relaxing and wonderful meal. My husband and I each tried the
winter squash soup with shrimp (my husband had this as an appetizer both nights). I also ordered the apple and goat cheese pastry as
a starter one night. Both were very good. For entrees our family
tried the following: pasta with a large prawn on top, cod and
pasta, chicken (actually, I think it was cornish hen) with
polenta, and a to-die-for veal chop (my recommendation if you
go). The kids' portions were a bit small (especially the cornish
hen) but with the delicious homemade gluten-free bread they
served, the beverages and other courses (including a to-die-for
chocolate lava-type cake), none of us went hungry! The poached
pear with an incredibly delicious chocolate sauce is also a must-try dessert item! All in all a wonderful experience -- thank you Des Si Et
Des Mets (which, by the way, means something like, "the ifs
and the buts," referring to special dietary requests, I am sure! __________________
